Cheerleaders at Grace High School have opportunities beyond the sidelines throughout the year, including service projects, special events, and attendance at a summer cheer camp. During camp, cheerleaders are evaluated over several days by staff members who observe their technical skills in areas such as jumps, motions, tumbling, stunting, dance, and leadership. Selected athletes are nominated to try out for the prestigious All-American Team and, on the final day of camp, perform in front of judges. Those who earn All-American status are then invited to perform at special events around the world.

This year, Grace High School sophomore Leora Flannery was among the cheerleaders nominated for All-American consideration. Leora earned a spot on the All-American Team and was invited to perform in the New Year’s Parade in Rome. She traveled the day after Christmas and spent a week immersed in rehearsals and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Outside of rehearsals, Leora and her team explored some of Italy’s most iconic landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, museums in Florence, and the Cathedral of Florence. The trip also included time for shopping and enjoying authentic Italian cuisine in the famous Piazza del Popolo.

The New Year’s Parade was televised and drew an estimated 200,000 spectators, including tourists and locals. The 2.5-mile route ran through the heart of Piazza del Popolo and lasted approximately three hours. Despite chilly temperatures in the low 40s and occasional drizzle, the experience was unforgettable.

Congratulations to Grace High School sophomore Leora Flannery on her hard work, dedication, and achievement in earning this prestigious honor and international performance opportunity.
