Carson Coker Leads Grace Golf Back to Prominence, Commits to The Master’s University

There is something special happening in Grace athletics. As our student-athletes continue to compete with excellence and represent Christ with character, one name has steadily risen to the top — Grace Senior Carson Coker.

Over the past several seasons, Carson has played a pivotal role in rebuilding and revitalizing the Grace School golf program. What was once a quiet roster has become a competitive force again in the Tri-Valley League, and much of that resurgence can be credited to his leadership, work ethic, and elite talent. Widely regarded as one of the premier junior golfers in Ventura County, Carson has captured multiple tournament victories and individual honors, firmly placing Grace golf back on the map.

Yet Carson’s story extends far beyond the fairways.

In the classroom, he has demonstrated the same discipline that defines his golf game. On track to graduate with an impressive 4.16 GPA, Carson has balanced the demands of competitive athletics with academic excellence. His commitment to growth is not limited to sports and academics — he has also flourished in the fine arts, taking on major acting roles and showcasing a versatility that reflects his well-rounded character.

Most importantly, Carson’s foundation is rooted in his faith in Jesus Christ. His consistency, humility, and servant-hearted leadership have made him a strong example both on and off campus. Teammates speak not only of his competitive drive, but of his encouragement, integrity, and Christ-centered perspective.

That faith-filled leadership will now carry him to the next level.

Carson has officially accepted an athletic scholarship to attend The Master’s University this fall, where he will compete for the Mustangs golf program. Known for its commitment to academic rigor and biblical conviction, The Master’s University provides a fitting next chapter for a student-athlete who has embraced both excellence and discipleship.

I had the chance to sit down with Carson to ask him some questions about golf, faith, and the future. Here is what he had to say.

Carson, when did you first begin playing golf, and how did your years as a junior and individual golfer shape both your skills and your character?

A: When I began playing golf sort of has two different answers depending on what you mean. I first picked up a golf club when I was four or five years old, out on the driving range with my dad, but I first started to seriously play golf when I started competing at the age of nine. Those years definitely helped to shape me into who I am today, both on and off the golf course, and helped me understand the importance—especially—of integrity even off the course

Competing in tournaments and earning top finishes across Ventura County, how did those experiences prepare you mentally, physically, and spiritually for collegiate-level golf?

A: Many of the kids whom I’ve had the pleasure of competing against across Ventura County probably will go on to play collegiate golf. They are some of the most impressive golfers that I’ve ever met. I think having such an immense level of competition so early on has helped to prepare me for the stage of collegiate-level competition. Many of the experiences, as well, that I’ve had, of just being able to talk to these guys on the course, have led to ministering opportunities, where I’ve been able to tell them a snippet of the gospel during the competition—something that I hope to continue to be able to do in college.

How has your faith in Christ helped guide you through the pressures of competition, success, and expectations as one of the top junior golfers in the area?

A: I think it’s just important to always remember that whatever you dedicate your time to—whether that be a sport, a theatre show, or a hobby/interest—doesn’t ultimately define you. I think always remembering that I was a saved child of God—and that’s all that really matters when the chips are down—helped to keep me collected under all the pressure that golf brought along with it, because if I didn’t have that to lean on, it would get incredibly stressful and overwhelming. I know that my value isn’t found in a trophy, you know? It’s all about perspective.

Who have been the key people God has placed in your life—family, coaches, teachers, or mentors—who have supported and encouraged your development as both a golfer and a young man?

A: My main golf coach, Steve, has helped me immensely in my development as a golfer, and I value him as a key asset in helping me develop both physically and in my mental toughness out on the golf course. Beyond this, people like my parents, friends, youth pastor, Trent, and other teachers like Pastor Howard and Mr. Carter have been invaluable in helping me to develop into the person that I am today. They told me that my golf didn’t define me, and pointed me to the Person that I am really playing golf for, which was Christ.

What has it meant to represent Grace as a student-athlete, and how has the school’s Christ-centered environment influenced your growth on and off the course?

A: It’s certainly been an honor to represent a school like Grace on the high school and CIF stage, since I cherish this school so much. I love all the people here because you can tell that they genuinely want to reflect the light of Jesus to those around them. And the school’s curriculum, too, has helped to reinforce a lot of the ideas that I mentioned above, about remembering that I’m a saved child of God, and that there’s something more than a trophy that I’m playing for, you know?

You’ve balanced high-level golf, strong academics, and participation in many Fine Arts performances. How has being involved in the arts helped shape your confidence, discipline, creativity, and relationships?

A: I will always say that doing something on stage in front of an audience is one of the most impressive things that a person can do. It requires incredible mental fortitude, whatever it may be, and I think my involvement in the arts has helped me to better control nerves during the tense moments that I may encounter on the golf course. The creativity required on stage has also had a big impact on who I am today, because I am, generally, a very creative person, and I enjoy reading, writing, watching, and performing in stories. Moreover, the Fine Arts Department has also allowed me to make friendships that I cherish incredibly and hope to carry on for the rest of my life.

With many opportunities available to you, what led you to choose The Master’s University, and how did prayer, faith, and discernment play a role in that decision?

A: It certainly wasn’t a light decision. It required a lot of discussion with my parents and long nights of prayer before I decided to attend the Master’s University. Ultimately, I came to that decision because it was close enough to where I could still attend my home church, The Church at Rocky Peak, regularly, and I clicked best with the golf coach and students on campus there, and so ultimately that was where I landed on and decided to attend come next semester.

As you prepare for collegiate golf, what lessons from Grace do you hope to carry forward; what advice do you have for future golfers at Grace, and how do you hope God continues to use golf as part of your future calling?

A: I hope to carry the lessons that I’ve learned from Grace on with me towards college, specifically that idea that I play for far more than just some trophy at the end of the day. For any incoming golfers to Grace, I would have that same advice for you, now, even as I step away from the Grace stage in May: PLAY FOR CHRIST. Ultimately, how God will use golf as part of my future calling is all in his will, and I leave that up to him, because where he leads, I will follow. But, I still thank him every day for all the amazing opportunities he’s presented in my life via golf and competing on the golf course.

Carson’s gratitude reflects the heart of Grace High School — a place committed to developing students spiritually, academically, and athletically. Carson’s journey is a testimony to what can happen when talent meets opportunity, discipline meets mentorship, and faith anchors it all.

As Carson prepares to wear Mustang colors next season, we celebrate not only Carson’s accomplishments, but the legacy he leaves behind. The revival of Grace golf will long bear his fingerprints, and his example will continue to inspire those who follow.

Carson’s story reminds us that success is not measured solely by trophies or scholarships, but by the character forged along the way.

Head of School Reflects on the Success of Transforming Grace

Last Friday, April 17, over 240 people came together at Grace Church for “Transforming Grace.” The night is designed to showcase to our families the rich history and God’s faithfulness at Grace while also raising money to refresh our campuses. The night was an incredible success on all fronts, showcasing our school and raising $150,000! A huge thank you to our sponsors and the amazing people who came that evening. I thoroughly enjoyed moving around the room, talking to so many great people, and observing our Grace families fellowshipping together around the common cause of our school.
